Everyday meals you can keep enjoying

No single food causes weight loss, and a meal described as healthy is not automatically low in calories. What matters is your overall intake and a pattern you can maintain. These ideas combine vegetables, a protein food and a starchy component so that a lighter meal still feels like a meal.

This guide is for adults who want general meal inspiration, not a calorie prescription or a children's diet. Individual needs vary. If you are pregnant, have a medical condition or a history of an eating disorder, get advice suited to you before following a weight-loss plan.

1. Chicken, lemon and roast vegetable tray

Roast chicken with peppers, courgettes and onions, adding a portion of potatoes alongside. Measure oil before drizzling instead of pouring freely from the bottle. Lemon, garlic and herbs bring flavour without needing a creamy sauce. Serve a portion, then put any leftovers away for another meal.

2. Lentil and mushroom bolognese

Simmer cooked lentils and finely chopped mushrooms in tomato sauce and serve with pasta. Include a side of green vegetables if you like. You do not need to remove pasta: choose an amount that suits your meal and avoid adding extra simply because there is more in the pan.

3. Salmon, potatoes and green beans

Cook a salmon fillet with lemon and pair it with boiled new potatoes and beans. A spoonful of plain yoghurt with dill makes an easy sauce. Keep butter and oil measured. This is a useful dinner when you want clearly separate components rather than a large mixed dish that is difficult to portion.

4. Bean chilli with a jacket potato

Use beans, tomatoes, peppers and onions for a thick chilli. Spoon over a potato and add shredded lettuce or other vegetables alongside. If adding cheese, grate a small amount so it spreads across the surface. Keep sour cream and other toppings optional rather than automatically adding every extra.

5. Tofu and vegetable stir-fry

Cook tofu with broccoli, peppers and mushrooms, then serve with rice or noodles. Use ginger, garlic and a measured sauce for flavour. A wide pan helps vegetables cook without stewing. Choose your portion before eating rather than taking the whole serving dish to the sofa.

6. Egg and spinach omelette with toast

Make an omelette with spinach and mushrooms, then serve with tomatoes and wholemeal toast. The toast is part of the meal, not something you need to avoid. If cheese is included, use it for flavour rather than filling the entire omelette with it. This also makes a quick lunch.

7. Chicken and white-bean soup

Combine cooked chicken, white beans, carrots and greens in a broth. Add bread if needed to make it a satisfying meal. Keep some vegetables chunky for texture. Portion extra soup into containers for later so a busy evening does not mean starting dinner from scratch.

8. Chickpea salad with a pitta

Mix chickpeas, cucumber, pepper, tomato and herbs with lemon dressing. Serve with a pitta and a little feta if wanted. Measure the dressing; generous pours of oil can change the energy content substantially. Our chickpea salad gives you a flexible base to adapt.

9. Turkey meatballs in tomato sauce

Make meatballs with turkey mince and herbs, cook thoroughly and serve in a tomato sauce with pasta and vegetables. Baking can make portioning and clearing up straightforward. Choose the mince and serving size that suit you; the word turkey alone does not make a dish a weight-loss meal.

10. Savoury lentil and roast carrot bowl

Combine cooked lentils, roast carrots, greens and a spoonful of yoghurt-and-lemon dressing. Add a small grain portion if that makes the meal more satisfying for you. Use spices such as cumin or smoked paprika to vary the flavour across the week without relying on a large amount of dressing.

Make the next choice easier

Plan two dinners and one lunch before shopping. Keep vegetables and a convenient protein food available, and freeze suitable portions you will not eat promptly. Choose a plate or bowl for snacks rather than eating from a large packet. Enjoy the meal and notice when you have had enough.

You do not need to ban favourite foods or skip meals. Sustainable changes are more useful than promising yourself a completely different diet overnight.
